Target Designation System for UGV and UAV Platforms

A common operating picture that marks what an unmanned air or ground vehicle sees and puts it on every screen in the field at the same moment.

Overview

When a drone sees something, saying it over the radio takes time. At the pace of an operation a coordinate can be passed wrong, someone can miss the call, and whoever hears it may not be in a position to react. The system takes that relay out of the loop: a target detected in the video from an unmanned air or ground vehicle is marked on the map and appears on every screen on the platform at once. Friendly units, hostile units and objectives are shown apart from one another, and the operator can place a mark by hand on the map as well. The vehicle reports the targets it detects in its own area of operations, and its camera view can be pulled and assessed at any moment. Fixed security cameras connect to the same structure, so whatever source the video comes from, the mark lands in the same shared picture. The interface is designed to be worn in the field on an augmented reality headset, and the same map is there on the operator's screen. The system is queried in plain language and by voice: whether there is a friendly unit inside a given radius, or where the nearest hostile unit is and how far away, comes back with a distance and a coordinate. Scope stops at detection, designation and getting that information out; what counts as a target, and whether the mark stays on the map, is the operator's call.

How It Works

  1. The mission profile is written down

Which platforms, which camera and telemetry hardware, and which mission the system will work on is put in writing.

  2. Video sources are connected

The cameras on the unmanned vehicles, and any fixed cameras, are connected; the map and the unit definitions are set up.

  3. Detection and designation go live

Targets in those sources are detected, written onto the map as friendly, hostile or objective, and pushed out to the shared picture.

  4. It is validated with the operator

The system is trialled in the field with the operator; designation behaviour and the query set settle into final form against the mission profile.

Key Capabilities

A Shared, Live Picture

The moment one unit marks what it sees, the mark is on every screen on the platform. Nobody waits for the information to come over the radio.

Multiple Video Sources

Cameras on unmanned air and ground vehicles and fixed security cameras feed the same system; wherever a target is seen, it lands in the same picture.

Plain Language and Voice Queries

Questions like “where is the nearest hostile unit” are asked by text or by voice; the system reads the marked targets and answers with a distance and a coordinate.

Where It Is Used

Open-Terrain Reconnaissance

A drone marks what it sees from kilometres up; a unit approaching from behind a ridge becomes visible to the team on the ground without waiting for a radio call.

Urban Tracking

Because fixed cameras and air platforms feed one picture, a target that disappears into the street grid can be followed from source to source.

Site and Camp Security

Cameras around the perimeter connect to the system; movement it picks up reaches the watch team's screen split into friendly, hostile and objective.

Training and Exercises

Which unit marked what is visible on one screen as the exercise runs, so the review afterwards does not start with a round of who saw what.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the system choose the target itself?

Targets detected in a vehicle's camera arrive as notifications, but what counts as a target and whether the mark stays on the map is decided by the operator. The system's scope is detection, designation and distributing that information; targeting and engagement are outside it.

Which video sources does it work with?

Cameras on unmanned air and ground vehicles and fixed security cameras connect to the same structure. Whether it runs on the hardware you already have becomes clear in the call, once we have looked at that hardware's video and telemetry output.

How does someone in the field see the marks?

The map and the marks are on the operator's screen. The interface is also designed to be used in the field on an augmented reality headset; which headset hardware it goes live on is settled within the project.

Can it talk to other systems?

Yes. The system is exposed over MCP, so the other AI tools your organisation runs can connect to the shared picture through that interface.
